Silly laptop

It's The EVE of New Years Eve! Excited for what is to come? I am!!!

I wanted to do a post today about my trip to Ikea, do you love it or hate it? I love it. I got out spending $40 bucks, patting myself on the back, so many inexpensive goodies there it's hard to stay focused. But I managed, that was a first!

I was inspired on my trip, so many pretties for almost any lifestyle: family, collegiate, minimalist, green, romantic, bold. I like ikea. But I Must purge. I Must declutter. So I can see more pretties, instead of just.... STUFF of which I have ALOT. Story of my life. Lets see how long the inspiration lasts, sigh.

Last Ikea mention that they should be paying me for, If you luv lattes & cappuccinos but hate the price (sideeye Starbucks), Ikea has a milk frother for $2!! It's is my new boo, two double A batteries (from the remote control and I was in business).

In other news, my laptop is not responsive, I ordered a battery from
Amazon, hopefully its the last $40 bucks I have to invest in the ol' HP before I can buy a MACBOOK :)

Before I go just want to send all the best wishes for a safe, healthy and prosperous new year to you and your family.

All the best.

Home Grown

photo 2

Mixing.  I mixed up some colors we had here.  Didn’t want to spend any money.

photo 3

Tested it on the walls, the dark grey got rejected (by the Hubbs) and the sage got rejected by me.

photo 5

I ended up buying a gallon of white paint to tone done the grey, I really liked it, but it was just so dark.  More mixing.

I gathered up all the paint around the house to do this.

The final result is a gray (grey) blue, almost slate but lighter.  Definitely not a normal shade for me, I’m all about lights and neutrals.  But I woke up today so HAPPY with it!  My favorite part is how it pops against all the other neutralness ‘round here.

Today my boys are painting to help me out and to give the ol’ Wii a break.  I get to keep Kya entertained, wish me luck!

P.S. Last nite was the first time I EVER saw It’s a Wonderful Life, do I live under a rock?  Tell me there is someone else out there who’s never seen it, it’s dated 1946, sheesh!

Best 10 days ever

This is the desk where I work.  My name is on the invisible door, ha!

I left here on December 23rd @ 4p and I don’t have to go back until January 3rd. 10 days off!!!  I can’t remember ever having 10 consecutive days off without a baby as the excuse for it!!

I spent the first two days relaxing but effective yesterday I’m in full on Getting-Something-Accomplished-Mode, then I plan to spend the last two days relaxing.

So far, I painted the master bedroom.  It pretty much took all day and being the (cheapo) risk taker I am, I mixed 3 different paints and came out with a color pretty close to the bedroom, I was going for lighter but beggars can’t be choosers.  I’m happys.

Today, the dining room.  It’s my messy place.

Tomorrow I’m taking a break to return library books and hit up the after Christmas Sale at Target (good stuff, go today if you can).

I’ll be back soon, hopefully with more pictures!  Hope you are all having a wonderfully, merry and bright, holiday season.

kya turns 5

I was wondering today, how many times a day do I use  I’m gonna record it one day, I’m sure it’s a lot.  I google EVERYTHING.  I’m probably their Biggest (and most loyal) customer, do you google? or bing?

I have an iphone4 and an ipad2 – both since the Summer, but today is the first day I got to use facetime.  We really are in the future!!  I can’t stop thinking about that.

Do you send ‘thank yous’? I really think they add a personal touch.  My own ill-mannered children don’t always give this gesture and it bugs me, but we’re working on it.  Tonight I had Kya write her thank yous from her bday, she was happy to do it and sealed them before I got to take a look.  You realize she is 5 and can’t spell much besides Kya, I wonder what they say.

Tonight was my office holiday party, I may or may not have ate my weight in shrimp and spiked the punch.

I finally got to wrap something in kraft paper.  I stole the rest of the wrapping d├ęcor from Susie and Martha, don’t you love blogs, full of inspiration.

I read someone else’s mail at work.  Calm it down, I just peeked in it, it was a magazine, Real Simple.  It has a good article about social networking, facebook, twitter, etc and how differently everyone uses it.  There is a blurb about it here, are you Team Can’t Be Bothered or Team Can’t Live Without It?  Personally, I’m over social networking except for loving that right now.

We don’t exchange gifts here but I always enjoy the season, I usually bake something for my neighbors, last year it cinnamon rolls, this year I’m thinking these.  Cause these apple dumplings from Thanksgiving did NOT go over well.

I’ve been hard at work here, all week painting over thrifted frames to get something on the walls in here.  I wanted to do one bubble painting to add some color and whimsy.

But the big one for the wall came out in a puddle.  Not cute, glad we had everything on hand so no money was lost in the making of this craft.

I’d have to add that during this craft Kya found a frozen ice in the freezer and ditched me.

Ok wrapping up, online tonight, I was visiting, they linked to this website, and I had to go look, it is one of my goals, getting organized.  While visiting I noticed their TV center and liked it.  But knew I couldn’t afford it to purchase built-ins.

Lightbulb moment: Ikea bookcases.  Then I thought, they would be too plain.  Boo.

But wait - we could add moulding?  Lightbulb moment, google: Ikea hacker and sure enough, there were details and images of someone that had already successfully tried it.  Booyah!

Did I mention how much I love google :)  So Inspired ….hope you are too.

Enjoy the Season!

Friday nites

My how my Friday nites have changed over the years.

Painting all the thrifted frames white.  My house walls are so bare its sterile, must add love.

No idea whats going in these frames but I do know, the secret to getting ahead is getting started! - Mark Twain.

Have a great weekend, the sweetest four year old I know turns 5 on Sunday!

Gift Ideas

I know this will be a BIG shopping weekend for all the holiday shoppers.  I wanted to throw out my 2 cents on a neighbor, coworker, teacher gift idea.

Last year, I saw this idea and I really liked it.

I thought, wouldn’t that cute sentiment be jazzier with this:

fam fun

I had done something similar for my sisters baby shower in 2009 as favors.

And they were a hit, most people texted us and said how good the cookies came out.  All they had to add was an egg, butter and vanilla.  This year, I searched online for dry vanilla so all my recipients have to add is the egg and butter, it arrived in less than 5 days.  Whoohoot.   {word to the wise: I did put the cookie ingredients in a cellophane bag inside the paper bag so the goodies don’t stain the paper.}

I just realized I should test this new vanilla before I gift it!

Last thing, don’t forget to package it pretty.  I’m going craft paper this year.

pinterest, oh how I’m liking thee!

red ribbon

red heart

kraft paper

Being green can be chic.

Well there’s my idea if want to gift something small, a batch of fresh hot chocolate chip cookies for Christmas morning or whenever they choose.

Happy Holidays!

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

I spent the early part of Saturday making discoveries around the house from our little vacation.  My sister Chalana was here with the boys but the threesome somehow managed to muck stuff up. Ugh.

I was blue about it.  Honestly, more like PO’d.

My inspiration board from pinterest was heavy on my mind.

for better or worse

I opted out of a birthday dinner with the in-laws cause I was so cranky.  I fell asleep enjoying my quiet time but when I awoke, I was lonely and even more blue.

Blue days, STINK.

Then I remembered:

You live and learn.

I snuck away last Saturday.

This photo is NOT Photoshopped, it is hand snapped, by me, SOOC the camera - beautiful.

One word.  Cancun, (Mexico)

Four words: Get your passport now!

Don’t get stuck paying expedite fees, (like me) be prepared when the invitation arrives.

I won’t say anything else.  I’ll let the photos talk.  I hope this one says, windy but beautiful.  This is the view from our room, gorgeous?  I know!!!!!

Westin Lagunamar I big puffy heart you.

I do not love you little BUG who flew in my morning cocktail, (yep morning cocktail).  Sprite and Malibubu…yumm

I loved it there and can’t even wait to get some more stamps on my passport.

At PHL Airport, the Officer at U.S. Customs said Welcome Back to the United States.  I said, It’s good to be back, and I meant it.

There’s no place like home.

We tried out homemade cranberry sauce this year, wasn’t a crowd favorite, although the Hubbs like it.

There was some dry turkey, eyes roll.

We used EVERY stick of butter shown.  For serious.

I promised myself not to stress & show my Type A personality.

I didn’t make rolls from scratch.

I didn’t bake Haik’s birthday cake on Wednesday nite.

I didn’t prepare two vegetables for Turkey day.

I used to mentally judge people who bought store bought pies, but now I get it.  You do what you can and let the rest fall into place.

Everyone helped prepare our meal and was suprisingly happy to help.

Hope your Thanksgiving was stress free and that you are still full of thanks and gratitude.

Oh, the funny part.  I cleaned out the leftovers on Wednesday night.  I OVER used the garbage disposal (pasta, whole clementines) and clogged up the sink – on Thanksgiving EVE people!

I hoped and wished and prayed that Haik could fix it with the plunger.  Nope.  I was a little grumpy about it, at first.  But then I forgave myself and went about having a thankfull day.  We washed dishes in the laundry room which in turn made me more thankful for basic stuff like indoor plumbing

Today, $40.81, and 20 mins later, it is repaired.  The salesman remembered the Hubbs from his last visit.  Smh and smiling, lesson learned.

Gobble Gobble

My mom was a really good cook.

Haik’s Grandmom Mary is a really good cook and so is his Mom.  Talk about pressure.ovenI want to be a really good cook, I think most women do.

But ‘er um, since I don’t eat a lot of things (herb stuffing, mac n cheese, cranberry sauce, told you I was picky) it makes it difficult for me to prepare them cause I don’t know how they should taste.

Last year we did Thanksgiving at home and everything came out so good,    thanks you Chow Basics.  It was the perfect guide for the novice who knows the ingredients, but just doesn’t know the exact measurements to get a good flavor balance.

Here’s a few tricks I learned:

  • grease your cornbread stuffing pan with butter so it’s moist and tasty (and impressive)
  • stuff lemon in your turkey (it will not taste lemony)
  • how to make a roux (so fancy pants)

This year I’m trying fresh cranberry sauce, yo.

I know how I want stuff to taste and look but sometimes the execution isn’t always perfect.  Thank God and the heavens for giving me the internet with photographs.  I’m still learning and if you need a coach for your meal, check out Thanksgiving for beginners – btw those are their pics.

My home style

I keep a folder on my work & home PC called inspiration.

Whenever I see a photo of something I like, I save it to the folder.  (I know you can use pinterest to do this, but I haven’t taken the time to figure that all the way out just yet)

This one I liked the simplicity of the night stand, plant, lamp, clock.

Easy bathroom wall art.  Regular paper, frame, fabric for mat, simple, call it done.

Reminded me of the color I painted my bedroom.

Those pretty yellow flowers just popped.  But so gonna pass on the lady over fireplace.

Do you notice my pattern:  gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray, white, taupe, cream, gray.

I’m am just drawn to these colors.

In my own head, I though BOOOORING, yawn.   But then I realized that these boooring colors are actually a style, cottage style, Restoration Hardware, au naturale, classic.  And it’s my style.

I have been fighting my lack of love for color but have decided to just go on and embrace it.  I’m all about linen and natural fibers.  It only took me a good 15+ years to figure it out.

What about you?  Find your style here and don’t forget to tell me, mine said:

Anything goes as long as it goes together. Blending different eras and styles with a single statement. My home has Eclectic Style.

But more like, Anything goes as long as it’s gray, cream, taupe and white.
